Objectiu de la convocatòria
The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards PhD fellowships to outstanding junior scientists worldwide who wish to pursue an ambitious PhD project in basic biomedical research in an internationally leading laboratory.
Característiques principals
PhD projects must be experimental, in the field of basic biomedical research, and aimed at elucidating fundamental biological phenomena in humans and generating new scientific knowledge. Some examples are:
  • Analysis of RNA polymerase I structure and transcription regulation
  • The role of spontaneous activity in the development of neural circuits
  • Intestinal symbionts induce distinct populations of regulatory T cells
  • Heterochromatin protein 1 secures survival and transmission of malaria parasites
  • Epigenetic reprogramming in the maternal germ line.

    Requisits
  • Applicants must be European citizens working in Europe or overseas and non-European citizens pursuing their PhD projects in Europe.
  • Projects must be experimental, in the field of basic biomedical research, and aimed at elucidating basic biological phenomena of human life and acquiring new scientific knowledge.
  • At the application deadline, applicants must have completed their first university entrance qualification (such as a high school diploma, A-levels, or an entrance test for university) no more than 8 years (96 months) earlier.
  • At the application deadline, applicants should have obtained their last university degree (BSc, diploma, MSc, or equivalent). If MSc studies are not yet finished and/or the certificate has not been received, it can be submitted up to four months later. If the official diploma cannot be issued in time, a university transcript can be included and at least one university degree certificate (BSc, etc.) must be provided.
  • If two candidates from the same laboratory apply for a PhD fellowship at the same time, only one of them may receive a fellowship. We, therefore, recommend that they apply at different deadlines.
  • Candidates should apply at the start or just before starting their PhD; applicants who began their project more than 6 months prior to the deadline are not eligible.
  • Fellows may not receive a regular personal income from an employer, though up to 5 hours per week of marginal income is acceptable.
  • Definition of the start of a PhD project:
    - Continuing in the same research group: the date on which the highest degree (e.g. BSc, MSc, diploma, DEA, licenciatura, laurea) was obtained before starting the PhD.
    - Changing the research group: the date of your arrival at your PhD laboratory.
    - PhD programmes requiring initial lab rotations, with the last rotation is in the PhD lab: the end of the lab rotation period.
    • Dotació
    Monthly stipend of €1,650 plus a country-dependent premium, a monthly allowance for research-related costs, additional benefits such as child and spouse allowances, as well as access to seminars, travel support, individual mentoring, and a worldwide network of fellows and alumni.
    Durada
    PhD fellowships are awarded for 24 months and may be extended once for up to 18 additional months. Any period the fellow spent working on their PhD prior to starting the fellowship will be deducted from the maximum extension period.
